Calvary CME “Voices of Praise Choir”

In 2009, under the pastoral leadership of Rev. Oliver E. Buie, Alicia Lawrence was selected as Minister of Music at Calvary CME Church. Alicia is a woman of God, who has been blessed with a Divine understanding of Praise and Worship. Quickly after being appointed, Alicia formed a choir and invited all who desired to sing to be a part.
In 2010, Pastor John Deron Johnson was appointed as Pastor of Calvary CME Church. He has served in our ministry as a strong leader, preacher, and teacher. Being a musician himself, he understood the importance of the music ministry in a church and gave Alicia full reign to take the choir in the direction in which the spirit led her. Calvary’s Choir became Calvary Voices of Praise. Alicia, using her musical talent not only inspired the members of the choir but also assisted encouraging the church collectively to move to a higher level in their worship experience. During this transition our choir and congregation has had the pleasure of knowing a true connection with God that comes through being true worshipers (John 4:23).

Oneonta Chancel Choir Members

Solo performances by Oneonta Chancel Choir Members Florence Agcawili and Nazani Ashijian.
Florence Agcawili, mezzo soprano, began her musical studies standing at the piano surrounded by uncles, aunts, and sisters singing popular songs of the day. Music was an integral part of her elementary education and Florence delighted in the varied types of songs she learned and performed throughout her grade school years. With high school came choral music and membership in the El Monte High School A Cappella Choir under the direction of Greg Larkin. High school also marked the beginning of her formal vocal training with Lois M. Wells. Both choral and vocal training continued at Rio Hondo College in Whittier. A member of the William Hall Master Chorale from 1969 to 2005, Florence performed many major choral works and toured with the Chorale throughout Europe, China, Australia, and New Zealand. Florence has been with the Oneonta Chancel Choir since 1989. In addition to her weekly responsibilities as alto section leader, she was a featured soloist in works as varied as Rossini’s Stabat Mater, Gloria by John Rutter, and the Nativity According to St. Luke by Randall Thompson. One of the high points of her tenure at Oneonta was portraying the Mother in Menotti’s Amahl and the Night Visitors. Florence currently studies voice with Diane Thomas in Glendale.
Nazani Ashjian, mezzo soprano, is of Armenian descent, and made her professional opera debut in the role of a student in 'The Bourgeois Gentleman' with the Pasadena Symphony. Nazani is a UCLA graduate where she performed the roles of "Nancy" in Albert Herring; "L'Enfant and L'ecureuille" in L'Enfant et les Sortileges; and "Ramiro" in La Finta Giardiniera. Nazani has performed the role of "Sondra Finchley" in the West Coast premiere of An American Tragedy. Nazani is the recipient of many awards and scholarships, and has studied voice with prominent voice coaches such as with Lisa Stidham, Dennis Parnell, Judith Natalucci, and Gail Gordon.

Quincee Gideon, Trauma and Resilience: A Journey in Healing

Workshop Presenter - Quincee Gideon, will speak about the journey in healing through trauma and resilience.
My journey in becoming a therapist started in a village in Zambia, Africa when I discovered and experienced the vast possibility of the human spirit to heal and transform after significant trauma and loss. This transformation happens within relationship with someone that cares and speaks worthiness into the life of the hurting. This is a process that transforms individuals and couples all across the globe and can happen within the safety of a therapeutic setting. I began my training at Vanderbilt Psychological and Counseling Center while studying Professional Counseling at Lipscomb University and continued my training in a doctoral program for Clinical Psychology at Fuller Graduate School of Psychology. I work with adolescents, adults and couples in order to address the long-term issues of depression, anxiety, posttraumatic stress, relationship issues, and grief. My hope is to journey together to find a more integrated sense of self and purpose within your life.

Alessandra Giampaolo
Grief/Loss. Children/Adolescents: Depression, Anxiety, Self Harm. Parenting. Family & Couples Counseling. Phototherapy.Workshop Presenter - Alessandra Giampaolo MSW, will be speaking about Grief/Loss; Children/Adolescents: Depression, Anxiety, Self Harm; Parenting; Family & Couples Counseling; and Phototherapy.
Alessandra is passionate about her therapeutic work and privileged to give her clients a voice. She loves seeing healing in action and being a part of her clients’ growth towards healing, resilience, and thriving. As one of her focuses is grief, she believes that all of us experience grief in our lives in one way or another. Transitions from a new home, new school, new city, new state, and/or new family structure cause grief. A parent or child who has to battle cancer or another major illness has loss associated with changes in lifestyle. There is immense grief through a divorce for not only the parents, but also the children and rest of the extended family as well. Grief is found in depression and anxiety, and manifests itself in eating disorders and self harming behavior. It surrounds us and we could all use some support and healing through our grieving process.
By using any means necessary for connection (art, photography, music, sand tray, play, dance, etc.), she has worked with children/adolescents who suffered from depression, anxiety/panic attacks, eating disorders, developmental disabilities, self harming behavior, anger, bullying, and low self esteem. Through her work with them, she has become a firm believer in the healing power of the therapeutic relationship. Although her focus is on children and adolescents, she believes that the strength and resilience of the family is of utmost importance. Thus, she enjoys working with parents individually and in couples to ensure that they are sensitively attuned to their children’s needs and are offering them an environment in which to thrive.
Another one of Alessandra’s passions is photography. In the last few years, she has discovered the incredible power phototherapy that has for healing and helping her clients explore their innermost worlds. By using photography “in” therapy and “as” therapy, she helps her clients delve deeper into their past and their present, and articulate their hopes for the future. Using this medium, she has worked with both kids and adults who have depression, anxiety, developmental disabilities, and eating disorders, and who engage in self harm.
Her research during graduate school focused on the impact art therapy has on a child with autism’s ability to communicate and build relationships with others. Prior to graduating from Smith College School for Social Work with a Masters of Social Work degree focusing on clinical social work, Alessandra immersed herself in Thai culture as she taught English in a small town in Thailand and volunteered her way through Southeast Asia, where she found her calling to social work and social justice. She was also an All-American, National Champion (2005), and two-time team captain for the University of Michigan softball team. She has been a mentor, coach, and role model for aspiring athletes for many years.
I am here to sit with you, be with you, listen to you, and be a part of healing you.

Carol Wong, "How Grownups Can Help Kids After a Disaster"

Workshop Presenter - Carol Wong, will speak about how grownups can help kids after a disaster.
I received my training in marriage and family therapy at Fuller Theological Seminary. I have been a certified instructor of parenting and couple workshops with Family Wellness, and I am a certified counselor in premarital and marital assessment through the Prepare/Enrich Program. In addition, I hold a master degree in educational psychology and PPS credential in school psychology from California State University, Long Beach.
An area of special interest for me is helping families with children who have special needs. I previously worked as a school psychologist for 12 years as part of an IEP team that assessed and provided services for special needs students through the IEP process. Altogether, I have worked in public and private schools in school counseling for 20 years. Also, I am a parent of both a gifted child and a special education child, and deeply empathize with other families who share a similar journey. I love to support parents.
We are created for relationships. We have been created by and for relationship with God and with others. When we are understood and known by another, we are able to understand and know ourselves also. I believe therapy is a unique relationship in which a person can be listened to and understood, providing a context that facilitates growing and knowing oneself. I believe therapy is a healing and enriching experience that helps people find wholeness and integration in physical, emotional, social, and spiritual aspects individually and within the family. When clients are open to engage in therapy with me, I consider it a priviledge. I respect my client's trust whether I am working with an individual, couple, family, child, or adolescent, and I want them to know they belong and are loved.
